Original Artifact #2: Interview #1*This interview was held with an individual, who is friends with a teenager whose parents recently got a divorce.
Were there any noticeable changes in this individual’s behavior? "Definitely, he was so much quieter. At lunch, he would just sit there and eat his lunch (many days he wouldn't even eat) without saying a word. Whenever I asked him to hang out, he would always say he had something else to do, but it felt like he was making up an excuse to not hang out. No matter how hard I tried, he pushed me away." Other than his behavior, did the divorce have any other negative effects on him? "He completely lost all motivation to do anything. He stopped trying in school, he stopped taking care of himself. It especially hurt him because he was a senior. He was so unmotivated that he didn't even apply to any colleges, and still does not know what he is going to do next year after he graduates. All of this because he only lives with one parent now. I think that shows the importance of growing up in a traditional mother and father household." How the divorce change his outlook on life or his self-confidence? "At first, he thought that the divorce was his fault. He opened up about this to me, and I was able to convince him that this was not true, and I’m very thankful for that. Divorce happens because two people cannot get along anymore, because they do not think that the person they are with is no longer the right person for them. He told me that because of this, he felt each of his parents only loved half of him, since the other half of him came from the other parent. It broke his idea of his parent’s love towards him being unconditional. I think after that he grew apart from each of his parents and started going his own path." Today me and Daddy went to the park. We rode on the swings and he pushed me so high into the air I felt like I was flying. But then, I fell off the swing, and my knee started bleeding a lot. Daddy came to the rescue. He picked me up, carried me to the car, and made me feel all better. His words made me stop crying. He gave me a big hug, and I felt safe in his arms. After that, we went together to eat ice cream at a shop. This time, he let me get a Large cone, and I felt like a big boy. We talked about the new friends I made at school, and Daddy said they could come over for a play date one day. But then Daddy had to go for a job meeting, so he dropped me off at home with Mommy and left. Mommy asked me for my help in making dinner. We made Daddy’s favorite, steak and mashed potatoes. She let me mash the potatoes and she told me that I mashed them so good and the potatoes were very creamy and soft. When Daddy came home, I yelled surprise and he picked me up and gave me another big hug. We all ate dinner together at the table, and it was fun. But then it was time for bed. Mommy and Daddy tucked me in bed, read me a bedtime story, and kissed me good night. It was the best day ever. I love my Mommy and Daddy. Questions, Through the Eyes of a 6-year-old Boy By: Adam T. Cumberbatch Can you tuck me into bed mama? Don't forget to kiss me goodnight. Can you tell me a story mama, Before you turn out the lights? Can you kiss my forehead mama, Like you used to do before? Can you at least tell me you love me mama, Before you close the bedroom door? Why don't you wanna talk to me mama? I miss the sound of your voice. Mama, can you please say somethin'? I guess if you don't, it's your choice. But mama, I have to tell you somethin'... Even though you're quiet mama, I know what you're goin' through. I understand why you cry now mama, Cause I'm hurtin' too. Why'd you have to leave us daddy? I still had some growin' up to do. Did we somehow make you mad daddy? Or, were we not good enough for you? Do you know that mama cries at night daddy? I think it's cause she sleeps alone. Daddy, can you please call the house tonight, Cause mama is waitin' by the phone. You know mama still loves you daddy? But I hate you for what you done. you put tears in mama's eyes, daddy. And in the eyes of your son. I thought you said you'd never leave daddy? You said we'd be pals, you and me. But, you broke your promise daddy, Like you broke this family. |
